The issues born out of Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) have been well publicised. Like most, RSM recognise that it’s a positive change that fuel refiners are now forced to ensure that at least 5% of their product is sustainably sourced. This means that at least 5% of products like Class A2 Gasoil is mainly plant derived oils. This means that regular testing along with real-time visibility of what’s going on in the tank is now essential.
What is fuel testing?
- A fuel sample recovered from a fuel tank by a qualified and experience professional engineer
- Fuel tested in a UKAS accredited laboratory
- Supporting report which shows an ISO result of the quality of the fuel
- A cost-effective tool that will determine the health of your fuel system
- It identifies the presence of diesel bug which could cause major problems if left untreated.
Why do I need to get my fuel tested?
Even refinery grade Class A2 Gasoil draws in water, it’s hygroscopic which means that over a period of time fuel has a naturel life-cycle of depreciating quality.
It’s good practice to test your fuel every 12-18 months to make sure that free standing water, suspended water, particulate and diesel bug are not going to cause unnecessary damage or downtime with whichever application it is feeding. If caught early enough all of the usual issues with fuel left standing for prolonged periods of time can be remedied.
Until you have visibility of what’s going on inside your heating system, generator or stored fuel tank then it isn’t possible to know whether the fuel is within specification or not. The type of testing and delivery of testing is crucial when trying to establish any associated risk.
RSM can help you make an informed decision by giving you information on fuel testing and the solutions that may become applicable.
